Posted this week under Architecture (click here) is a brief blog about architect Wm. J. Carpenter’s most recognized building in DeLand, Florida, the Putnam Hotel.  This 1922 state of the art Mediterranean Revival Style 120-room structure was reportedly “the first fireproof hotel in Florida.  Located at 255 West New York Avenue, just off Woodland Boulevard, the “Main Street” of DeLand, it was the entertainment center of the community for many years. Adjacent to the Athens Theater, it was the home for visiting entertainers, as well as affluent winter visitors.  During WWII it served the Naval Air and other military personnel stationed in the area as a home away from home.

The structure is strategically located adjacent to the DeLand Main Street Historic District.  After a Florida Site Survey conducted in 1986 the building was found eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Buildings.
